Back to etiquette in the news:
1. I am mortified that the video of a brawl in my hometown of Sarasota Florida made it to CNN and Fox News. It happened at a local football game. Some coaches and a 14-year old football players attacked a referee, ultimately fracturing his shoulder. Fortunately the entire team has been banned from the league and the attackers could be charged with felony assault.
Their motive? They felt the ref was making unfair calls. Now our whole community suffers and feels embarrassed. That's the cost of bad etiquette -- it can hurt an entire region.
While this story is horrible, it does show that there is an opportunity to bring etiquette training to many sports teams. In fact, one sports franchise called I9 Sports prides itself on teaching sportsmanship to its players. You could team up with other sports teams and be their resident etiquette and sportsmanship coach.
2. Also in the news this week...Toddler beauty pageants continue to get more controversial. Now
parents are stuffing their kids' shorts and tops to make them look more like full-grown adults. One
girl had her shorts stuffed so her backside would look more rounded, specifically to look like a famous celebrity. Worse, she also wears a bra with prosthetic breasts in it to make her chest look formed -- at age 3! Can't we let little girls be little girls, and not try to turn them into adults too soon?
3. Do you think men or women have worse etiquette? The jury is still out overall, but one recent study of male and female tennis players found that men are much more prone to behaviors that get them penalties and fines than women are -- by a factor of two!
That's it for etiquette in the news this week.
If you enjoy reading about practical applications of etiquette, you probably would make a great etiquette trainer. We can help. Sign up for any of our Certification programs on this site.
Have a great week.
Sincerely,
