Etiquette Breaking News: Kids locked out

Etiquette is definitely in the news in a big way today. In fact, I write this while Fox News is talking about a major etiquette-related story.

Businesses nationwide are so sick and tired of disruptive kids that they are banning them!

For instance, McDain's Restaurant in Pittsburgh is banning kids under 6 because patrons are complaining that kids are "creating a ruckus."

Meanwhile, airlines are starting to introduce kid-free zones, while banning kids from first class (One would think that kids who can fly first class have taken the traditional etiquette classes, but I guess not!).

Also, Whole Foods is going to have a children-free shopping period.

The bottom line behind these trends is that parents aren't training kids in good manners. We could argue that society is less and less tolerant to kids, but -- like it or not -- the fact is that we should expect to go to a restaurant, grocery store, or airline and be with kids who are well-behaved. Nobody wants to be with kids who are running around and screaming in a restaurant, constantly kicking the seat in front of them in an airplane, or fighting with one another in a grocery store.

At the same time, parents need to do a better job of assessing their kids' behavior and keeping them out of places where they can disrupt others.

This news story, and the fact that it is being featured as a lead story on a major network, shows how important etiquette training has become in today's world.
