Etiquette in the News this Week: Cheating and Corrupt Teachers

Some weeks it breaks my heart to bring you news about breakdowns in etiquette and character in society. I prefer bringing up cases where people do the right thing, but this week I can't ignore a disgraceful story about cheating teachers.

It seems that teachers at four dozen schools in Atlanta, Georgia were caught cheating. They  either helped students to answer questions correctly on standardized tests, or changed student answers once the exams were handed in.

178 teachers and principals cheated. 44 schools examined had cheating educators!

Now, I understand that many teachers are under extreme pressure to perform. Schools can lose funding if students don't do well on standardized tests.

It doesn't matter. There is no reason to cheat, and here we have an example of systematic  corruption. We know from past horrors in our civilization that "just following orders" doesn't cut it.

Teachers are supposed to be one of the foundations of our society. If they are caught cheating, what message does that send to students and everyone else about cheating?

Etiquette is not just about saying "Please" and "Thank you." In our etiquette program at least,
etiquette is also about having a strong character and showing integrity in all that we do.

This case is very disturbing, and it is going to take the school system in Atlanta a long time to earn back the public's trust. Plus, some of these educators might end up going to jail.

As etiquette trainers, you have the chance to take a stand for honesty and good character. You can bring your program to the children and teens in  your community, while being a model and example through your own behavior. We need you to help set the tone for what society should be.

I sincerely hope that, if you haven't already, you join us today by getting Certified as an etiquette
trainer.
