Etiquette in the News This Past Week

This past week we have seen at least three interesting issues regarding etiquette. Once again, there is no shortage of news demonstrating the need for us to get out there and help bring etiquette to a world that sorely needs it.

Here are last week's feature stories:

1. A 13-year old girl was suspended from school after posting a threatening message on her facebook. Her message stated that she wished her teacher was in the World Trade Center on 911. Her school found out about the message and suspended her. Interestingly, the young girl didn't think she was doing anything even remotely risky or wrong. Etiquette today must focus on one's behavior and judgment online, including social media.

2. A woman on a train was kicked off after speaking continuously on her cell phone for 16 hours. 16 hours! Passengers started complaining much earlier, but train officials wouldn't remove her until 16 hours of ongoing loud cell phone conversations. This shows not only an example of bad etiquette, but also how far we have let our standards slip as a society. We now tolerate up to 16 hours of bad manners before we are allowed to take action. That's unfortunate...and, of course, the woman in question sees herself as the victim and felt entitled to speak loudly on the phone while disrupting others' quiet.

3. Everyone is talking about Arnold S, his out-of-wedlock child, and the end of his marriage. It is easy to joke about this. Really, though, Arnold showed a complete lack of respect, character, and judgment by doing what he did. Etiquette is about having integrity and character -- and respecting our loved ones. It makes me sad that we see so many examples like this in the news so often.

Well, that's an update about etiquette -- or its lack -- in the news this past week.

The conclusion: We need people like you to bring etiquette back to a world that sorely needs it.

Please check out our various etiquette programs now and, if you haven't already, register for one or more of them. You will be glad you did.
